UX Research Kick-Off
We started noticing that, we skipped a few steps in the design thinking process. Our design team got requirements and ideas from business. Afterwards we starting building and designing. Our issue was that we didn’t include the user. No research, no data, no user insights, no … So we designed from best practices.

How are we going to start?
First things first, let me tackle the “Define part”. Before we start inviting users, let’s make sure we are up to speed. I interviewed my team to see how they would tackle UX research. I came to the conclusion that we will start collaboration together with product owners, developers, marketing,… Let’s start with a small project.
Notification workshop
Our notifications on the website didn’t bring enough conversion, why?
We had two weeks to uncover the problem and design the solution. Sadly enough we didn’t have time to interview and test users. So lets setup a workshop to get insight from our colleagues.
Workshop to define possible problems our users could have.
4Main pain points defined, problems and possible solutions.

Now that we know our painpoints from our stakeholders. I created a planning on what to tackle and how.
First Concepts
I sat together with the Product owner of the notifications so create the first concepts of the new notifications.

Gamification?
We created some concepts based on requirements, but what if we think out of the box?
I timeboxed my self, in 1 hour I had to create some concepts other then notifications.
Maybe a small guy in the header? A small mascot like the paperclip of Word? Promotion header?

Final Wireframe
Because of time restrictions, I created some basic wireframes.
These were discussed with Product owner, Developers,
Designers, Marketing,… Everybody agreed and was on the same line.

Results
Conversion rate on notification
+45%
On the first day!
Because defined painpoints within our company we almost doubled the success rate of the notification. Because we took a different approach we were able to work together and build a better product. These amazing results attracted the attention of our c-level managers. After a meeting with them I conviced them this was only the start and that we can start with adding users to our process to get even better results in the future.
Next steps for UX research
Go!Go!Go Vamos!
With this pilot project, I convinced bussiness that design thinking is the way to go. Now I need to create a planning and build the research department.
With this project I want to show you that even with a small project like a notification. You can show to your stakeholders how important it is to listen to your users and their pains.
The smallest adaptation can make a world of change!
Thank you!
